A Quick Guide to T-Shirts

T-shirts are great! Did you know that t-shirts evolved out of the long johns men wore in the 19th century? For those who don’t know, long johns are basically a style of underwear with long legs and sleeves, commonly worn during cool weather. These funny-looking undies actually got their name from a wrestler titled Big John Sullivan, or “The Boston Strong Boy”. Not only was Big John renowned for his fighting style but also his obscure fashion, as unlike other fighters of his time, Big John wore one-piece thermals (also known as a union suit) in the ring. As Big John gained more recognition, there was a lot of focus on his fashion sense, thus the title of “long johns” being created to describe his bizarre wrestling suit!

While the t-shirt has been around for what seems to be the beginning of time, this article of clothing only became popular around the 1950’s. Prior to it’s appearance on actors such as Marlon Brando and James Dean, as well as movies such as a Streetcar Named Desire and Rebel Without A Cause the t-shirt wasn’t your typical piece of clothing. We can definitely thank Hollywood for the beloved t-shirts rise in fame!

And during the ‘60s t-shirts begun that get even more popular as a result of rock and roll bands and professional sports teams beginning to print on t-shirts as a means of producing merchandise. Such shirts were extremely quick to become a mainstream part of fashion, and as you’ve probably noticed are still extremely popular today.

One of the earliest examples of a T-shirt with a logo or print can be seen in the 1939 edition of the film The Wizard of Oz. Where three men attending the Brushup Company in Emerald City can be seen to be wearing green tees with the word Oz printed on the front.

While it might seem like common sense, after you have a bit of a think about it, most people actually don’t realise that the t-shirt is named after the letter T that the shirt makes when it is unfolded.

So know you know a heap about t-shirts, you probably have a new found interest in them or at least think that they’re super cool! So why not try printing your own tee!?! There are loads of t shirt printing in Melbourne, and having a personalised shirt unique to you and your style would be pretty awesome.
